My architect is going to do this

Slightly differently, of course. But he's a character, not someone I can hire. Is this not awesome? We could finally hold the library! Of course, it might take three stories.

Oh, wait -- W might take that as a challenge...

but if you take a couple of books out, and someone comes down the stairs not knowing... are you liable if they fall and break their neck?

(the stair-drawers are very cool. makes me wish I had stairs.)

If you mean could someone leave a book on a shelf and cause someone to twist their knee, maybe. But book removal doesn't weaken the shelves, if I am reading correctly. The walls absorb the weight.

It's a rental in London, apparently.

I wonder if I could build a freestanding Library Tower that way?

Ummmmm....

Maybe. I'm very spacey right now, but I think it said the load-bearing walls of the building support it. So you might need flying buttresses!

As I have long feet, I sometimes kick the risers. I'd hate to do that to my book spines. And the dirt that I clean off of the stairs ... on my precious books! I'd rather go for a variation of the Japanese Tansu for the under stair space (accessible from the side. The traditional ones were a set of boxes that locked together so that it was a stable stair surface with access on the side. I've always coveted one)
The shelves on the side of the stair well are good though. I've heard of that being done - just strip off the sheet rock and finish the interior surface. And for a book addict you can justify by pointing to the added insulation factor!

We made a small room under the stairs, the last house I owned. Drywalled it with insulation underneath. I stored all my beer-making supplies under there. It was reached through a revolving bookcase.

I've seen the slide-out stair drawers/shoe racks. Pretty snazzy, and an upgrade I'd budget for in any housebuilding to come.
