My architect is going to do this

Slightly differently, of course. But he's a character, not someone I can hire. Is this not awesome? We could finally hold the library! Of course, it might take three stories.

The shelves on the side of the stair well are good though. I've heard of that being done - just strip off the sheet rock and finish the interior surface. And for a book addict you can justify by pointing to the added insulation factor!

We made a small room under the stairs, the last house I owned. Drywalled it with insulation underneath. I stored all my beer-making supplies under there. It was reached through a revolving bookcase.

I've seen the slide-out stair drawers/shoe racks. Pretty snazzy, and an upgrade I'd budget for in any housebuilding to come.
