Sign of the Times

Just returned from S Austin past Arboretum Market -- at 10:20 am the parking lot is almost empty, and this mini-mall is anchored by Talbot's and Saks.

Who says the rich aren't also being careful?

Um, actually I didn't hear anyone say the rich aren't also being careful. In fact, in my experience they seem to be quick to zip the wallet. Too bad, but we live in exciting times, eh?

We have a small but potent uberclass here that made money during the dotcom surge and then sold a bunch of stock before the crash. So we have a Rolls dealership, and a Lamborghini dealership -- and some other high end places. So we keep getting magazines with house beautiful spreads from locals. (They may be super-modern in style, but they have the artistic look that says: "We didn't build it up slowly over years, we paid for it to look good!"

I know my friend who teaches ballroom dance has seen a slight fall-off, but The Domain still has shops that sell one type of purse. So someone WAS buying. It will be interesting to see who remains in business after the turn of the year.

And a century frm now (assuming that the earth doesn't succumb to the heat death of the universe) people will be writing historical novels about these interesting times, and fanatic reenactors will be costuming up for the turn of the 21st Fair!

I would not bet against it!
