Life, Interrupted

Just a buck? Well, if 10,000 people donate a dollar, a nice young couple won't lose their house to the mortgage company. Their story is like so many stories right now. They are both ministers, Ebony currently a stay-at-home mom dealing with a special needs child, Daniel working to support his family.

Then their old car started having problems -- enough that it stopped working. Which meant Daniel could not easily get to work, and he lost that job. Which meant no money to fix the old car. And the bills started piling up. They did the second mortgage routine, to try and keep afloat while they redoubled their efforts to get new jobs.

Then Ebony discovers -- surprise! -- she's carrying an addition to the family. (I know more couples who ended up with "surprise!"....) While they wouldn't trade in the third, it's gonna make some things worse.

Of course, since things have been bad in the economy for quite a while, back here in the reality-based community, Ebony and Daniel have been loaning and giving money to people in much worse shape than they are. Now, when their savings have gone either to others in need or to pay for the special schooling and the nurse who helps with their developmentally delayed son, there's no one left to help them.

But we can do this. All the dumb stuff we spend money on? We can find a buck. Or five. Or ten. I now have a sweater fund. The money that didn't go to the sweater sale will go toward this mortgage -- and buying some burger gift bucks to hand out to the folks on the street corners.

(Oh -- if you're on vacation in San Francisco always take the leftovers. Someone on the streets needs a meal, so don't waste food!)

I know there are hundreds of thousands who need help. But we know about this young couple. If we hit the mark, they may be able to keep their house. If we don't, they have seed money to put down a deposit on an apartment.
