Now he's on doxycycline and prednisone for the rest of his life to precent the disease re-emerging (we hope).

Isn't the pred a steroid? Steroids are bad for humans with the condition -- they'll strip your adrenals, if I recall correctly.

Oh yes. But without pred in low doses he crashes -- runs fevers, throws up and gets diarrhea.

He has my sympathies -- no creature should have to go through it. Not when it's so simple to cure, if caught in the first month.
