Perfect -- unfortunately....

These bookcases are exactly what I want -- solid wood, sealed to show grain, folding, metal hardware, mission style, plus a top shelf for decoration or cat perch. $99.00 is a tad higher than I wanted, but free shipping.

But...they come disassembled. And according to the one comment, they take two people to assemble. Bother. Will go look at the Container Store ones again to see if they will do. Not mission at all, painted -- but well made and folding and I think here.

FYI -- you can get folding bookcases with metal hardware for as little as $49.99 at World Market, but they are painted, streamlined, no top shelf, not mission style. Not as well made as the Container Store ones or the ones on-line.

If target were not being such idiots, I guess I could get the Target ones and buy metal shelf supports and hinges. Upping price, but extending life.

Decisions, decisions. In the meantime, a friend has loaned me milk cases to stack and use as a bookcase next to desk.

Still pushing 101 F. ....

When I bought folding bookshelves as part of the Great Office Make-Over of 2009, I was Surprised and Horrified to find that they came disassembled, and, yes, it took both Steve and me (and Hexapuma) to put them together.

Can I get most of the hardware, etc. attached, and then take them to a party to finish assembling? Or is it an even bigger hassle than that?

Actually, no, not that easy. My recollection is that one person had to hold, like, the back of the unit while the second person seated the two side pieces, and there was something Utter Bizarre about getting the shelves in. I wouldn't want to try it without a knowledgeable building partner. If you know someone who will work for pizza, that's the way to go, for getting these shelves assembled. They are gorgeous, but I'm still not sure they were worth the hassle of putting them together.

Erg. And not a unit of measurement....

Will think on it a while.

How about these

plus a top

Or this set if you want taller

I have always had very good luck with this company.

Actually --

I looked at these, but they didn't come in natural in the shorter size. But I just looked again, and they do come in natural in the drop-down list -- they just don't show that color with the single height bookcase. So thanks for bringing them up again, because they are now back on the list of possibles!

The Billy bookcases tha tI bought from IKEA also claimed that it needed two to assemble. I managed with the aid of some piles of books(!) to prop up the sides when I was doing some critical attachments.

Good to know!

I have to admit I like the ones at student market best. But I am thinking hard about whether paying $30 more for shipping and having them mostly assembled would be a good thing. I suspect I'll need to buy narrower pegs for the ones from Home Collectors -- the mantels generally don't fit -- but I really want mantels.

But I have hand issues, so I'm not sure how difficult the assemblage will be. I could brace them with books and my massage table folded up as padding, and maybe do it. Perhaps I should order one from them and see how it goes, before going whole-hog with two....

Sigh. Don't have to decide today.
