Tattoos -- What was a joy becomes an embarrassment?

I've thought about a tattoo more than once, living as I do in an area where it's very popular. But I've lived long enough to know that what I would have wanted at one point probably is not what I would want on my body now -- at least not in that form. Plus I have always had delicate skin. This article says that 1 on 6 people will want a tattoo removed this year, even as a new tattoo parlor opens -- somewhere -- every day. It's estimated that among people aged 18 to 29, nearly half of them have tattoos.

To remove it without leaving a scar or a negative, blackened tattoo can take anywhere from 15-20 visits to the removal specialist, in 6-8 week intervals. We're talking hundreds to thousands of dollars. The better your immune system, the easier it is for your body to adsorb the dye. The darker your skin, the more risk there is of leaving a ghost tattoo, a lighter version of the removed design.

Blue and black tattoos are the easiest to get rid of. Reds are hard -- yellow, orange and white almost impossible to remove. Start thinking about a cover tattoo!

Exceptions for me? If I had an ugly scar to cover, I might find a really good artist and do an oriental tattoo around the area. Ironically, my one visible scar looks like it could be a black light flower, so I've never bothered to get a tattoo over it! Since I keloid scar, I would hesitate to get permanent eye makeup. I've never even dared to get my ears pierced.

And what is the polite thing to say about tattoos? I have always complimented people on tattoos I thought beautiful just as I do jewelry -- that's how I'd assumed they were meant to be seen. But recently I read that some people find it intrusive to have people comment on their tattoos -- or suggestive.

Folk with tattoos, how do you view it? I wouldn't comment on a tattoo while doing a massage on someone I didn't know -- it might be located in an area usually covered by clothing. But if it's on your arm, or shoulder, a place often not covered by clothes? Is that public adornment?

I'm hoping to get my first tattoo sometime in the next year or 2. Once you get a certain age, it's like why are you keeping your skin pristine for anyways? My body is full of stretch marks and scars and wrinkling, why not add body art to it? I keloid too BTW and i've found if you keloid easily you need to take more Vitamin C, zinc, and copper. It has reduced the number of scars I get.

Fortunately I haven't taken a serious injury to skin recently, but I'm taking Vit C and Zinc right now. Not sure if copper is in the mix.

I might break down and get a design someday. But it should be intensely personal. And where to put it? Not sure. We'll see. Maybe one of my own dragons, once the first book is written.

I have 1 tattoo, and when I wear clothes that can show it, I certainly don't mind people mentioning it - I love my tattoo, and it makes me happy when people think it is pretty or however they view it.

Mine is on my chest, left side, just below my clavicle - most of my clothes cover it, but a few of my camisole or tank top-style shirts show it off, as well as most of my 'going clubbing' tops (not that I have many of those).

Is this it? Or is it the more elaborate design on your Live Journal?

Thanks for sharing -- that's how I thought they should be treated!

I've asked a number of strangers about their tattoo. Particularly if it is writing of some kind. I've gotten some wonderful stories from people. One man had his children's names in a spiral down his wrist. Another had his grandfater's name encircling his bicep.

I have, too. I would be sorry not to know their stories!

I have a tattoo on my upper arm, which is usually covered by my shirtsleeves. Sometimes the bottom edge peeps out and catches someone's eye, but usually I'm the one pulling up my sleeve to show it off because I still love it so much, two years later. :D For my part, I'm happy to talk about it and wouldn't mind if someone caught a glimpse and asked about it.

The only tattoo-encounter I've found rude/intrusive was when a coworker saw the bottom edge, and came over and pulled up my sleeve himself to look at it. >:( Not cool!

Ah, yeah, that's a little forward from someone who is just a working associate!

Thanks for the feedback!
