For the curious...BMI

Dr. Hall has a mess of calculators on his web site, and uses multiple ways to figure BMI, breast cancer risk, etc.

Here's the index:

And breast cancer risk:

Body Mass Index:

I suspect it has uses. It's like most figures used to gauge health--you can't use them in isolation. Too many variables. I'm a ballroom dancer, for example, AND an RMT. I have a lot more muscle than a large percentage of the population, even as that doesn't necessarily make me stronger--the LBb leeches the strength and tone from them as fast as I can build it up.

So, my wrists look bony, and you can count the ribs above my boobs--but I'm puffy from the LBb and other problems in legs/hips/waist. My BMI is close to what this doctor suggests is the upper limit of healthy for my height and weight--but is it accurate? Good question.

LBb?

I also have a lot more muscle than the average population, but according to the BMI, I'd have to lose 60-65 lbs to get to normal weight. That's just not going to happen. I have maybe 20 lbs. I can lose safely. After that, I'd have to take off an arm.

LBb?

It's my shorthand for the causative agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi. I have chronic Lyme, and among other side effects is bloating, inability to process carbohydrates like wheat, corn, milk, potatoes--when I get trace amounts, I bloat. I still eat small amounts of rice, which also makes me bloat, but not as badly. I figure I can't cut it out completely...worried about diet balance.

After that, I'd have to take off an arm.

Definite bad idea. 8^) I'd vote for trying to slowly lose the 20, and then say screw it for the rest. If your blood work is good, and you feel healthy, is a doctor going to hassle you? Not unless any extra weight appears in the doctor's own, personal bugbear area--like stomach fat weirds out some doctors, because it increases certain risks.

And unless you're devoted to your doctor, a doc who is a nag about one small thing can be replaced. Speaking from experience...

aha. just curious - is it all carbs, or just those? have you tried the more exotic grains like quinoa, amaranth, or spelt? Lyme disease was a serious problem where I grew up - we had to have regular talks about it in school, and there were commercials/PSAs on TV about it all the time.

As for the weight, well if some asshat hadn't swiped my bike, I think I'd have those last 20 off by the end of the summer. Now I need a new bike.

Compensating...

Part of the bloat is just intolerance for various carbs--the rest is blood sugar, which is also Lyme related. I get almost drunk on them, then fall asleep hard--and I mean hard, I have maybe a two-minute warning, and then I could wreck a car. Snap awake 20 minutes later. I do get trace amounts of amaranth in nut bars I can eat, but that's it for grains. I do things like eat pappadum at Indian restaurants, etc. I get crunch deprived. I can have fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds. And meat, thank heavens. No shellfish, but I had that problem before (and also no mushrooms, sigh.)

Now I need a new bike.

Is real new in budget, or are you going to check out the pawn shops? Good luck--

hmm. I had a roommate who did a similar thing in college. Sugar, wheat, and rice would get him drunk as a sailor. He'd drink rum just to get extra drunk.

Newy new WAS in the budget, but now that my truck is kaput I'll have to settle for pawn shopping. I may try freecycle before I go to the pawn shop though.
