You have less than 72 hours to get in on the free books that twelve authors are offering in EPUB format. Like my cat Merlyn, you can be shifty and submit any reader that prefers or uses EPUB format.

Take advantage of this rare, probably never to be repeated offer! We're talking free books by a variety of authors in different genres. You read across genres? This is your promotion! And remember -- you're photographing your Reader, you can set it up with a cup of coffee and a cigarette, or show me your cat reading his favorite Midnight Louie mystery. You don't HAVE to appear (fingers and hands count!)

(Creativity makes me laugh.)

Book View Café Releases Exordium: The Phoenix in Flight by Sherwood Smith and Dave Trowbridge

Exordium: The Phoenix in Flight (Science Fiction)
Sherwood Smith and Dave Trowbridge
$3.99 ISBN: 978161138 059 0

I'm very excited about this! All of Sherwood Smith's character and world-building skills applied to SF? And David Trowbridge is not only an old hand at SF, he's also the spouse of writer Deborah J. Ross, author of the excellent Northlight and Jaydium. This promises to be great stuff, and at an unbeatable price!

So -- until my Nuala sales are high enough to let me write the next book, here's some good SF for your Reader. I'll be getting a copy for my Calibre, and will report back as soon as I finish the other six reviews I have to write!

Here's the basis of the story:

Brandon nyr-Arkad, the Emperor's scapegrace youngest son, defies protocol and evades a ceremonial duty, a defiance punishable by death. He's just ahead of an attack on the Panarchy of the Thousand Suns by Eusabian, a revenge twenty years in the making.

Phoenix in Flight begins the five volume arc of Exordium, as Brandon discovers what happened to his home after he left, and he has to make a decision: stay an outlaw, or return and deal with the smoking ruins of his rejected world?

Sherwood Smith and Dave Trowbridge are longtime science fiction readers as well as writers.

Oh, how did I miss this when it first came out in paperback! This is a wonderful SF novel in the tradition I think of as cultural-anthropological SF. It was just re-released on e-book under the author's current writing name, Deborah J. Ross, but it's the same Northlight released in 1995 by Deborah Wheeler. I wanted to give you all a real review, because if you like my Nuala books, I think there's a good chance you'll enjoy Northlight.

If I was to sum this story up in one sentence, I would say that Northlight is a tale about the many forms of love, regret, and second chances.

Recognize that horse? It's one of Judith Tarr's Lipps!

Still not convinced?

Here is a little more: )
You will not forget the POV characters, or the others who help and hinder them on their quest. And at $2.99 for the e-book over at Book View Cafe, this is a steal. Highly recommended!

However -- they do not port over reviews from the mass market paperback to the Kindle listing. So, if anyone is in the mood to review favorably, now's your chance!

Spread the word -- Nuala is back in print!

I've been waiting for this! Talk about a bizarre true crime story!

Book View Café (BVC) is pleased to announce the publication of FRENCH FRIED, an unfortunately true account of English author Chris Dolley’s harrowing first eight months in France. The book has been described as ‘A Year in Provence with Miss Marple and Gerald Durrell.’ Upon surviving a difficult move to a foreign country, Dolley and wife discover their life savings and Dolley’s identity have been stolen. Adding insult to injury, the authorities have no time for his problem so with the “help” of an 80 year-old mother-in-law, Dolley tracks the criminals himself through the bureaucracies of France, Spain, Ireland, and Great Britain.

FRENCH FRIED is an account of the author’s hilarious, yet frightening journey through a nightmare of international crime.

Book View Café today announced it is partnering with Smashwords to distribute its growing ebook catalogue.

“Smashwords is taking a truly dynamic approach to ebooks,” said Book View Café Project Manager Sarah Zettel. “From the beginning, BVC has promised readers the books they want, when they want them. Smashwords’ commitment to delivering multi-format ebooks to a wide variety of major retail outlets and mobile smart phone platforms will help us keep that promise.”

Book View Café will make the majority of their current ebooks available through Smashwords’ bookstore, affiliates, and retail distribution partners. This will include titles by award-winning and bestselling authors such as Sarah Zettel, Sylvia Kelso, Steven Harper, Pati Nagle, and Chris Dolley.

Smashwords currently publishes and distributes over 6,500 original ebooks from 3,000 independent authors and 100 small independent publishers. The service launched in May 2008 with a focus on self-published authors, and then in May 2009 expanded its offerings to support publishers, such as Book View as well. Smashwords distribution relationships with Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Sony, and Kobo (formerly ShortCovers) will ensure BVC titles are available for online reading to a worldwide audience, across both dedicated ebook reading devices and mobile smart phones.

“We’re pleased to work with Book View Café to help connect their authors with the rapidly expanding audience of ebook readers,” said Mark Coker, founder of Smashwords. “Book View authors join a growing roster of professionally published Smashwords authors who are leveraging the power of ebooks to publish and distribute their out-of-print, reverted rights and unpublished works as ebooks.”

In addition to its authors’ personal offerings, Book View Café will contribute their newly formed Book View Press titles, ROCKET BOY AND THE GEEK GIRLS, an anthology of rare and classic science fiction stories and THE SHADOW CONSPIRACY, an all-new steampunk collection, to the Smashwords catalog. A fantasy anthology, DRAGON LORDS AND WARRIOR WOMEN, and a book on writing and the publishing industry are being planned for release in early 2010, and will be made available through Smashwords.

On April 26, www.BookVewCafe.com, the newly launched authors’ consortium, will release its ninth downloadable ebook, Vonda N. McIntyre's Dreamsnake. Dreamsnake was originally published by Houghton Mifflin in 1978. It won the Nebula Award®, the Hugo, the Locus Award, and the Pacific Northwest Booksellers’ Award. McIntyre is also known for her Starfarers series and five Star Trek novels.

BVC’s presentation of Dreamsnake includes an exclusive afterword. Dreamsnake and its fantasy cast (which the Book View Café blog helped create, with “Casting Dreamsnake”) will soon be featured at the website My Book, the Movie.

************************

If you have never read DREAMSNAKE, you must! In fact, it's time for me to re-read it, because what I meant to say about the story sounds like an over-excited six year-old trying to explain a plot.

But now, I must attend to a web site before a quick lunch and visit down south to writer CJ Mills AKA [livejournal.com profile] 1minnesotagirl. She's been remodeling, and I need to write down numbers while she measures. Maybe I can lure her into a meal at Casa de Luz.
