Another way to celebrate
Jul. 4th, 2011 03:40 pmI'm not sure we can pry Americans away from fireworks (we're like the Chinese -- we must blow things up. If we're not fighting anyone, we still need to see explosions. Fireworks is a safe way to channel these urges, when there isn't a fire ban in effect.)
But this is how a town in Poland celebrates the first day of Summer -- launching 11,000 paper lanterns into the sky at twilight. It wouldn't work here because the grass fires would be just as bad, but maybe for New Year's? Much colder and wetter down here then, much safer weather for paper lanterns.
I could definitely get into this! (I'm nutty about polar lights, too.)
