In order to make a Kindle version of my e-books, I need a State Sales Tax Permit. This will be frustrating, because Texas only allows you to keep a sales tax number for two years without reported sales tax -- then you lose the number. This happened in January, because I had not sold anything for two years while healing. So -- I had to re-apply.

When I lost it, I asked if it could be mothballed, since I would need it within the year. (Brava at the time, but I had to earn money somehow -- running out, you know.) They said no, I'd have to re-apply. Of course the form had a place for your old sales tax permit number. And they have a new category for virtual sales -- although it's not on any list easily accessed on-line.

I won't have sales tax from Amazon, as far as I can figure out. I'm considered a wholesaler, and it is Amazon.com who will collect sales tax. Whether they will share with the state of Texas is currently being decided in the courts.

Do I have the permit yet? Do I even have an e-mail saying I can start selling? Nope -- and there are $$ penalties for starting without the permit. But the solicitors who know I applied last Thursday are already calling. Since I don't need anything they are selling, to call it annoying is an understatement.

So don't expect me to pick up until you start talking -- I am screening calls!
