A reminder to all peeps concerned that the Hugo nominations are drawing to a close. This includes the Campbell, among other things. If it came out in 2013, it's probably eligible.

SFWA members--Nebula voting is coming to an end, and also what is (hopefully) the last round on reincorporation voting. You can still do the latter online at http://www.sfwa.org/reincorporation-vote/ You must be logged in to the discussion boards to vote.

And, Book View Cafe members--we all have to show up, even if only for fifteen minutes, for the annual board meeting this Saturday. Is your Skype fired up and ready?

The Northwest early voting location was packed. Two large lines -- when I got there, when I left -- the lady at the poll told me they had 1600 people yesterday just at that EVP.

Texans are not taking their right to vote lightly, either.

Everybody go vote!

Writer John Scalzi also wants you to register to vote.

Bottom line. I don't want to hear any grousing from ANYONE who does not register, and then vote, this year. Don't tell me you're blue and live in a red state, or red and live in a blue state. I live in %$#@$ Texas, all right? This is your right, your privilege, and your responsibility. There are people trying to take away a lot of your rights.

If you don't start screaming, it will happen.

So -- start by shocking the heck out of the pundits. Register to vote, and vote. Lots of links after the jump to Scalzi land.

Remember, if you don't bother to pay any attention to the running of the country, you have no leg to stand on when you say "That's not Fair!" or "They can't do that!"

In Texas, you can get voter registration cards at post offices, libraries, and groceries. You can go get info online.

I just discovered This Week In Blackness, and yes, that's a web site. It does not mince words as far as the famous Seven Words We Don't Say In Prime Time, and I did not allow the YouTube scripts, so it may not be work safe. But it is funny, smart, and dead on point on a lot of topics. This one makes this point -- THE CRAZIES PLAN TO VOTE AND PRESSURE THE REPUBLICANS INTO TAKING YOUR MOTHER'S SS AND MEDICARE AND TELLING HER TO LIVE ON PERSONAL SAVINGS (just to mention one Tea Party plan) so get out there and vote against them, dummies!

[Editorial remark: The next generation will either be saving or working until we die, but you try and cancel those two things NOW, and the Texas gray panthers will show you the reason that their weapon of choice is the shotgun -- because it doesn't have to be aimed carefully.]

Also, Zerlina Maxwell addresses Christine O'Donnell. Very funny, very true:

http://thisweekinblackness.com/blog/2010/10/04/dear-christine-odonnell/

This part should be a bumper sticker:

Dear Christine O’Donnell,

You are not me. I am not you. You are not us. We think you’re crazy.

Sincerely Yours,

Zerlina

P.S. Fire the staffer who thought it would be a good idea to start a campaign ad by saying, “I am not a witch.” They are not on your side.

********

I have voted and will be at the TV for the Rally for Sanity on Saturday. How about you?

My family always says: "Vote. It gives you the right to complain about the government."

In other words -- if you don't express your opinion by voting, no matter how futile it may seem in the scheme of things, you have no right to complain. Especially when local races, school boards, county races, judges -- all these things directly impact your world.

So -- from another list I am on, with permission. The links are for the state of Texas, but take a moment and answer this question for yourself, where you are -- don't NOT vote because you aren't on the rolls for some reason!

"I believe in voting.

You don't HAVE to vote, but if you don't register, then you can't suddenly
decide at the last minute and go vote.

Monday is the deadline to register in order to vote in the upcoming election
in November. I don't know what all's on the ballot, but I know Texas is
voting for a governor, congressional representatives, bond issues,
and various and sundry other items, I imagine.

If you don't have a voter registration card or aren't sure if you are still
registered to vote, or maybe you've moved, you can look at this site to
check your voter registration status.
https://team1.sos.state.tx.us/voterws/viw/faces/SearchSelectionVoter.jsp

Voter registration cards can be found all over the place, including
libraries and state and county offices and and most post offices. If that's
inconvenient for you, there's a spiffy online tool to help you, but read the
directions carefully because I think you have to mail it in once you've
printed it. https://webservices.sos.state.tx.us/vrapp/index.asp"

May this be useful to you! And I'll get back to writing and promoting books. . . .

Don't have to explain a generation from now that you sat out the biggest election in at least 50 -- and possibly 100 -- years. Register to vote! They find you for jury duty through your driver's license, not your voter's registration.

Posts -- eventually -- to come.

CODA: Last day for Florida, too -- and you may decide the election!

Well--

Thanks to W's car being nearly disemboweled (Or so it seems -- we're going on two weeks, here, and you know the Honda people are REALLY embarrassed, to say the least) my going to Dallas for a convention and then folding for two days, and other delights of the end of February, we didn't make it to the polls until today. I was still reading about the candidates' ideas (in their own words, of course, plus bloggers' observations...) so that suited me.

Except for the hour wait to vote. W tried over at the hospital, but that location was closed. Randall's had a line at 12:30...and so on.... Finally I picked up W at four, and we went to vote. He decided to come with me, so all we have Tuesday is the caucus at night. Once inside, one of the poll workers said it had been like that all day.

I deprived W of his nap before dancing, so I may have to abort on Odd Friday -- or at least not dress up. But getting into a sari takes time (at least for me, without other sari wearers there to kibbutz.) Fair is fair.

I hope you all have done your duty as citizens of a free nation and gone to vote. Remember -- you have no right to complain, if you didn't vote. And if you are not yet registered, WHY NOT? If you haven't noticed, things are weird and getting weirder. What direction do you want this country to go in? And if you don't vote, how do you think it's going to happen?
