Panelists will discuss the body of folk and fairy tales, legends and myths, religious
tales, superstitions and folklore that have all been richly mined for ideas and inspiration for modern fantasy writing. Why are these ideas so compelling? Are there stories we have told and re-told too many times? What ideas in the world folk reservoir deserve a second or even first look by fantasy writers?

What are the challenges and satisfactions of ultra-short form writing? Are short stories really the best "training tool" for writing? If you had your druthers, what length would you write most frequently? What are the challenges and satisfactions of the short story? What are the challenges and satisfactions of the novel? How do you know you are writing a novel and not a long short story? How do you know you have started a series?

limited to): Are there trends in spec fic art? Who were/are the major trendsetters? What were the influences? Why do colors go in and out of style? How much difference in fan and semi-pro art between regions, if any? Do book covers drive trends in art or does it go the other way around? How much is spec art affected by trends in the mainstream?

No Conestoga this year --

Well, I sent off the letter today telling Conestoga that I can't come this year. I did SoonerCon last weekend, and I still haven't done my con report -- mostly because I'm tired, and the ADD effect has been worse for several days. I want to do ApolloCon, and I don't think I can leave town for vacation at the end of the month, and be in any kind of shape to do Conestoga.

Part of the reason I wanted to do it was because in the past it's been such a cool convention, and I haven't seen Laurell Hamilton in several years -- it could have been good. But I hear she's got a bodyguard now (one of those unpleasant side-effects of being a bestselling author...) and I have the feeling I would not get to see much of her. They keep GoHs pretty busy. So...perhaps a different convention.
