A funny and pointed essay about sexism in the Geek community, and how woman are simply fed up with this #$%^.

All power to my sisters and brothers in the trenches. I was and am too much of an introvert* to fight this battle on the front lines -- I looked for professions where I had more passion for the fight. (Like getting book promotion or recognition for SF novels...) Software wasn't it.

Read on!

* (yes, I know, I have a great extrovert shell that gets better yearly, but crowds exhaust me.)

And don't let any smug idiot who doesn't know that booth babes are paid staff tell you that your form of geekiness is not the One True Geekiness. One of the nicest parties I ever attended at a convention was a small Dr. Who/Brit shows room event. I didn't know a thing about the greater Brit SF shows -- I just walked in through the open door. That's the best of fandom -- welcoming someone and sharing your enthusiasm with them.

John Scalzi offers a spirited defense of geeks everywhere, of every stripe. He has the street cred, folks -- if you must listen to someone else on the subject, he's a much better model!

Some of these are spectacular, and all are worth checking out. The first is a stunning steampunk hat!

Madeleine Robins found them! Enjoy!

I was always afraid that I was not really a geek, because I'm more interested in writing fantasy & SF than in catching up on Buffy. (You'll be sad/amused to know that I saw the first season, then taped the second (had a class that night) and kept coming home too tired to watch stuff. I also taped the third season before giving up.) Buffy will be in my future, not my past. I am also a potted plant and chocolate woman.

But I do have more SF/Fantasy DVDs than anything except Jane Austin stuff.

Also -- if I had known about Fiesta!Giles, I would have taken up a collection, because if [livejournal.com profile] suricattus doesn't have one, I think she should have one.

The comments are also worth reading!
