In March of 2012 a dear friend took me to the first class of an extended seminar taught by Tom and Bobbi Best, talented people trained in psychology, NLP, and shamanism. Although Tom transitioned to the other side of time after only two weekends of that class, his lessons and influence still transform my life. Some teachers are like that. Many people continue teaching new lessons in this spirit, especially his wife and partner Bobbi Best and Master Instructor Linaka Hana. It was Keith Fail of NLP Resources Austin who took over after Tom left us, and taught the same core lessons Tom had begun, finishing our seminar. Keith is one of Tom's students who felt called to teach what he had learned, and so they are both my mentors.

I have learned a great deal from Keith Fail, lessons I have taken with me, moving into a vast world beyond the borders of anything I knew in my previous life. I recommend this short interview as a peek into the worldviews of other cultures, gifts we can bring back with us. Despite the humor of Hollywood's interpretation of taking the peace of other cultures back into the real world, it's possible.

Just remember that change begins within yourself, deep in the heart. You will indeed call into being the changes you hope to see through your own behavior.

Don't change others. Change yourself.

Inspire others to change.

Tomorrow night (Wednesday) there will be a meeting called "Super Charge Your Decision-Making Ability with NLP!" This would be a nice way to taste a bit of NLP for the very reasonable price of $10 to help offset the price of the room.

I think this link will get you there. There is also a group in the Austin, TX area -- they meet Tuesday nights.

Spent the weekend in San Antonio learning advanced techniques for NLP. Bobbi Best and Linaka Hana are using recordings of great NLP teachers presenting their strongest areas. I learned a lot, and can see that I'll be working on this material for years. Best Resources does let people come for just one weekend, for $300. I'd recommend going to one of their regular practitioner classes, not the master level ones, if it's your first time -- you'll get more out of it, because like most anything in life, there's a special vocabulary tossed around. They do run specials on visiting a class for the first time, so it's worth asking them.

Or stop off at an NLP Meetup -- there are groups in Austin and in San Antonio, and I can recommend the people in both groups! Meetups average $5-10 dollars for 1-2 hours of presentation or practice. A very affordable way to try out the techniques for you! And yes, they are very valuable skills even if you are not a counselor or in sales.

If you are a member of Austin Meetup, you can probably see this link, but I suspect you'll have to join the group to register. Tomorrow night's topic (March 26, 2013) is "How to Enjoy Work: Allowing Work/Life Balance to Improve Your Quality of Life." This meetup is $10.

The main site is http://www.meetup.com/.

I was double-booked, since I'm helping out the Basic practitioner class in Austin, taught by Keith Fail and Katie Raver. So I'll be at their next meeting. You can still join the class, and also talk to them about a one-weekend price. http://www.nlpresourcesaustin.com/practitioner

I hate weeks so busy you scarcely remember what happened.

High points include:

Finished moving out of second storage unit. I am once again living in box city. This time, I have the energy to unpack! Go, me! Anyone need moving boxes? I have a couple dozen ready for adoption!

Have segregated six boxes of books for my traveling bookstore sale on Friday. Once this event is past (it may be more boxes by then, and possibly free book bags with purchase!) I get to return, with thanks, the borrowed box movers with thank-you gifts to the appropriate wonderful people who loaned them to me. Both carts were critical to my success!

Continued job search. I have barely begun in some senses, because putting up a resume of a person who has done many varied things is a challenge. You can check me out at LinkedIn!

Went to a rocking formal tea with longtime friends and had a great visit with them.

Attended an organizational meeting for the NLP Practitioners class starting up at the end of March. This is an Austin class, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I have done my share of self-improvement in my life -- I have learned a myriad number of ways to organize information, learn new things, work well with others, etc. -- and NLP, taught by the right people? It trumps all other systems to date.

Keith and Katie, the instructors and organizers, are outstanding at what they do. They will help you master this material and grow in the process. I should stress that this material all builds, almost effortlessly, upon each module. Don't let the huge amount of info on that page overwhelm you. Why? Because your subconscious is a sponge, and it swiftly grabs any new system that improves on what it's been previously using. Plus, bonus -- you forget nothing that you have used previously as a life skill. You can always return to a prior system you like. Think of NLP as adding to your toolbox of life in a BIG way. You'll have Keith as well as two wonderful guest instructors presenting this material, and a host of us helping you practice it real time!

They have payment plans. (In fact, there is an advance purchase price available before March first!) There are systems in place if you have to miss a weekend. I hope to assist with the class, although at this point I will be building your packets and missing the first weekend. I'm taking the Master NLP class in San Antonio, and there's overlap, so we shall see.

But, seriously? Life changing. Stupendous instruction. Worth examining. (Not a cult -- I promise!)

And -- how I got involved in NLP? A friend told me that I used NLP in my Alfreda novels.

In closing, for your edification *and* amusement: How to Become Pope. It's not too late to start!

Well, last week was nuts, so I didn't get to post this link. But if you're in the Austin Metroplex and would like a taste of NLP work, tonight at 7:00 pm is "Getting Past Social Anxiety." Keith Fail is scheduled to teach the class, and this is a great chance to see Keith in action, and get a mini-lesson in an NLP skill. Just $10, and that's a steal!

If you haven't tried the "Meetup.com" site, it's easy to use and a great way to sample different kinds of things. Here's the link for the NLP meetups.

The way my week is going, I may be home writing instead. But I trust you'll all have an interesting time!

So -- is it a disease, or is the person unhealthy, and tipping toward a disease? This columnist opens up the subject. I'm currently coming to the opinion that we can walk around asymptomatic to serious things that we've been exposed to...and then something knocks us to our knees, allowing that organism/state change/change of body balance to seize us by the throat. Suddenly we're drowning in deep water.

Some people never find their feet again -- never recover enough to lift their head, look around for purchase, and lay in a plan to get back to the solid ground of the riverbank.

I've had a lot of experience with this (unfortunately) and I can say that the old chestnut of "listening to your body" is a crucial concept we need to teach children from the cradle. For example, are they really hungry? If so, what kind of food do they want? One friend of mine has taught her children that a fast carb is all well and good, but it doesn't satisfy long, and if you depend on it, you'll end up with a headache, cranky, etc. Her kids are learning to say "I didn't eat enough at breakfast. May I have some cheese, please?" They understand that cookies are good, but they need some protein with cookies, or that's where the headache comes from.

There are lots of ways to start talking with your unconscious. I've explored several of them. The one I'm currently using (and I'm delighted with its ability to connect the conscious and unconscious mind) is NLP. Turns out NLP is very useful for small things, and Big Things.

I'm experimenting this week with something that I'd almost lost -- body awareness that is not pain-triggered.

Here comes the New Age-y crap -- brace yourself and read on. I promise that this is worth a moment of your time.

Ask your body what's going on. Ask it what it wants. Ask it what it wants for You, the major portion of the beautiful, faceted gem that makes up your complete being. Use positive words and imagery, always -- your body needs encouragement, too. Remember that your body may not communicate with words, because images were your first language.

What is the positive intention of that pain in your hand? Is it actually warning you that something you're doing is wrong, and will lead to long term injury?

Your unconscious knows about 90% more about you than your conscious mind.

Scary thought, eh?

Maybe it's time to ask its opinion about things?

This fall, several Austin NLP practitioners are going to offer mini-sessions on NLP -- concepts and exercises that you can try out NOW. If it's gonna work for you, you'll know fairly quickly, because your unconscious always chooses the most effective strategy that it knows to handle a problem or situation. This will be a great way to test out the technique for yourself. The 90 minute sessions will be very inexpensive and fun as well. Looks like they will be offered several times a month, in the evenings, this fall.

When I know more about them, or the dates, I will post them here. I should say that it looks like my unconscious has been teaching itself a lot of NLP techniques over the years -- my novels are full of NLP problem-solving on the part of several characters. Without my ever reading a word about NLP. My point being that the basics of this are easy to learn, because you know a lot of the stuff already -- you've just never put it together in the most useful fashion.

An easy way to restructure your learning exists. Greater Austin folk, an inexpensive way to learn some of the techniques approaches! And, everyone else? If you are interested in NLP, but have heard that some people do not use the techniques wisely, shall we say -- I have good people I can ask.

The Book View Cafe sites have been down for TWO days. As we were loading the new ebookstore for its launch. we are not only disappointed and annoyed but now behind our scheduled testing of the site.

STABBITY * STABBITY * STABBITY

Well, had my third NLP seminar weekend. The people teaching, Keith Fail, Katie Raver and other local NLP practitioners assisting, did a great job. This was especially impressive because our original senior teacher, Tom Best, died suddenly and peacefully on the 24th. He'd had an outstanding weekend teaching a short seminar here in the Austin area, and a lovely morning with his wife and their beloved dogs. Tom laid down for a short nap and never woke up.

I felt that I had found a new teacher for the next step in my evolution. The only reason I did not shake out my piggy bank and take that class last weekend was because I am so new to NLP, I thought I might hold back the group, or spend the weekend bewildered. If there's ever a next time, I'm shaking out the piggy bank. I hadn't offered him a hug yet, either, because he was simultaneously the most generous, compassionate soul I've ever met, and a very private man. He shared so much of himself, he and his wife Bobbi, that I did not want to intrude on their private time. So Bobbi will have to take his hugs, too, next time I see her.

I can see Tom grinning, because he's still teaching us, just from the next plane. He launched us, and now I have to do my part and learn what has been set before me, and teach what I can. On the one hand it seems odd to keep tearing up for a man I had known less than a month. But he was the kind of person who touched so many lives, so many places - who gave so much, continuously, making the world a better place.

It seems right to grieve for those of us he had to leave behind. Tom's out on the next great adventure, and I suspect he will be with all of us, too. Tom clearly loved water, judging from the photos I've seen posted by his friends and students. I don't know if he ever got to see the Great Lakes - but here's a picture I took of Lake Michigan, Tom. I recommend you check it out. I wish I could have invited you up there to teach on the white sands, but another time...another life.
