You may not know this--may never have thought about it.  But O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois USA is not named for some local politician who made sure an airport was centrally located and had the start-up funding that it needed.

It's named for a hero.  A WWII fighter pilot who survived the event that earned him his Metal of Honor, and went on to other great feats.  The one that earned him a Navy Cross was his last action on Earth.  He was only 29, and left behind a wife, a daughter, and the life he did not finish.

On Memorial Day, give thought to the people who made and make everything possible for us.  Those who serve would tell us that they are not all heroes.  But they answered the call to protect our Constitution and our country.  They deserve all our thanks and courtesy, and whatever help we can give them to find a new place to stand in the flow of time.

They have returned from a far country, and can never be the same.

...they are asking wounded veterans for portions of their signing bonuses back. Wasn't this danger pay, that they could bank for their families in case they were seriously wounded? If they have to give it back, shouldn't that be said right up front?

I thought the "you've been in the National Guard on deployment for almost two years, but you're still one day shy of qualifying for the G.I. Bill" was really bad -- one of the best investments we ever made in our country, denied to current vets? Then there was the vet hospital disgrace, with Walter E. Reed exhibit A. Now, they want signing bonuses back?

If the vets of America are ready for a mass, peaceful demonstration, with their families and friends, I'm there.

UPDATE: [livejournal.com profile] ebeeman says that this was a clerical error, and it has already been canceled by the Pentagon.

However -- there is still this:

"The Pentagon will not comment on allegations that thousands of other soldiers just sent home from Iraq and other invasions, including Afghanistan, will not receive these sorts of bills. They cannot comment on those cases."

It always amazes me that when I thank a veteran for serving in the military, I usually find out that I am the first person -- even including relatives, sometimes -- who has ever done so. Remember that their sacrifice of time, sweat, blood -- and often life or limb -- is what allows us to wrestle at the polls every few years. The good about this country is what keeps us all going through the dark times, when our wicked doppelganger is in charge.

Thank a vet today. [livejournal.com profile] clouds_loom, I'll be writing your partner. But for all the vets, thank you all.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
-- John McCrae (1872-1918)
