alfreda89: (We the People)
I’ve put it off for over a week, ever since I last faced the ancient web site…the ancient software needed to update it. Over a decade ago, I grabbed the best solution available to build a text site for a shoestring nonprofit run by a nationally respected visionary. They wanted fast downloads on already obsolete machines, on dial up systems. They wanted more text than most people could imagine. They wanted it easy on the eyes. They enthusiastically toss things up on it, willy-nilly.

They have no money to update the frame site. I have no time to build my own new site, much less one for them. This site, their activism site, contains precious information. People still go to it, despite its age. Its most valuable commodity needs updating. That has been what I’ve been up to, in the dark hours. Once again, perhaps for the last time, I go to update www.UniversalLivingWage.org.

Just a reminder to check the auto-renew status on your domains. I thought I'd set one to Manual, and turns out it was on auto-renew for two years. My decision to drop that one was recent, so I just got dinged by GoDaddy.com for two years on a domain I don't want.

I will be moving everything I can from them in the next two weeks, and the two that I can't move will transfer as soon as possible after their renew. So this just confirms leaving a group that has insulted me with their advertising for several years now. Have been too busy to bother with it.

No longer too busy.

This article is not brand, spanking new, but it's new to me. Note that the majority of these sites are not evil, exactly -- they are careless at best and at worst contain code that could open your machine up to exploitation -- or cause you to have hidden "backlinks" on your web site. The majority of the "safe" themes were old, and in need of major upgrading through apps or other changes.

And these were the top ten hits on Google the day the programmer grabbed and did her research piece. So -- in this case, "Free" can get you into a lot of trouble.

I won't be looking for WordPress Themes from these people.

So -- web site parking is getting expensive. I am letting go some sites. .MOBI is going -- but I also have Dragonrain.INFO, Dragonrain.ORG and Dragonrain.US. Which should I keep? This is the title for the dragon book I'm planning.

It's the worst over-the-top sites of 2009! (Caution -- a couple of these can trigger seizures, and I do not think I am kidding.) They have the worst of biz, nonprofit, and so forth as well. I checked, fearful of finding one of my last sites still up, a nonprofit. But that site still works, people can usually find things, and since I cannot learn new software right now, it will have to stay until the group attracts someone else who has talent and modern skills.

I figure that eventually I'll learn WordPress and design new graphics for it, and that will be my own new site. Eventually. For now, it's new site or new books. Guess which I chose.

In the meantime -- don't get blinded here....

I've tossed up a website for a friend whose self-published (and quite good, actually) novel is released July 4th. I know the browsers never match, but I'd like it to look good in both Firefox and IE (designed for Firefox 3.0, because I am out of date coding and I know that better). I'd be interested to know of any fast way to get the white Firefox table to show up in IE. It would solve the problem of the bottom navigation not looking right on page 3, because the left column is only navigation. Also can't remember how to shorten the table on two -- we don't need quite so much space under the sample right now. I cut heights in two places, but the browser is having none of it.

I would be interested to know how it looks in AOL (boo hiss) Safari and anything else someone wants to contribute. If one is hopeless, I'll have to put up a suggested browser. I tried to find her a designer, but everyone was not taking new clients!

It's www.chanterpress.com for the curious.

By they way -- this would be a wonderful purchase for anyone interested in WWII or family/generational works. The author is published in short and non-fiction, and it's been professionally edited and copy-edited. She just got tired of 22 year old agents & NYC editors telling her that no one was interested in WWII anymore. She wanted a Father's Day release, but Lulu was very hard to work with...I may have to look for another packager for me, if Lulu is going downhill.

I've already figured out a way to do what I wanted -- but it's nice to have a security blanket! ;^)

More confirming the "F" pattern of web design, and also including the currently amusing pass-around that shows a photo of George Brett at bat. The women were focused on his face, while the men alternated between face and crotch.

On another site (the one I came from) a commenter claimed that this was the strike zone. Well, yes...the belt is. But there's almost always a cut to the pitcher releasing the ball. Apparently, men also check out even the equipment of dogs when asked to browse the American Kennel Club site.

So yes -- between thinking about women and comparing themselves to other males, perhaps men ARE thinking about sex every 3 seconds... ;^)

So -- I spend the afternoon sifting stuff from a half a dozen sources, trying to build a couple of pages for one of my big clients, who are entering into a tussle with the legislative bills being proposed. I launch the pages, they look great, I check every link -- and I tell the president that she can check the site. I get home from class, she likes everything, all is well. Then I decide to double-check the .pdfs I posted, because you never know if you've blinked and forgot to make the target "_blank" or something....

And lo and behold, the ONE link that isn't a pdf I made, to the NCES/government site -- the link is ALREADY A COBWEB!

Some days I hate this job. I was suspicious of this industry from the first, and so far nothing has happened to change my mind.

I'm dreaming of Macs....

Here I finally pay for my account, go looking for different ways to display the journal...and they are either a) boring or b) hiding somewhere so I can't just flip through a bunch.

I may have to design my own.

Waiting for W to return from the gym so we can go New Year's Eve with folk -- no First Night here, the idea of willingly going to an area with 500,000 people is a non-starter for me.

Yeah, I don't do the Trail of Tights, either...

CODA: All right, Trail of LIGHTS, thank you very much. Do I make fun of YOUR typos?! And the film was indeed HOODWINKED -- "Into the Woods" being the musical that body-slams as many fairy tales as they can cram into the time slot.
