This article talks about no-nos in the resume biz. It also has an interesting image (created for jobs in Europe, so they're talking about CVs as opposed to resumes.) It's worth taking a look.

A couple of things you can do right now include making sure you have a professional email address for responses. And get rid of a photo in your actual resume.

So I get a note today from HR in a state division, saying that they only accept apps through the Work in Texas site, and they will hold my writing samples until they receive my application.

I sent the application first through the Work in Texas site, and there was no offer of a way to submit the samples. I'd assumed that the email address under the "Submit writing samples" bullet was the place to submit the samples, as there was no way to attach samples (unlike the Federal site.)

So I wrote back to tell her this, and to say that I would re-submit if she had not yet received the application.

This is when I worry about these things. I am going to try and launch everything I can this week, including the HHS site that I fear wishes to be courted with either chocolate or the sacrifice of a fresh carrot at midnight on the keyboard.

I might need every day the listing is open to make sure it actually GOT there.

Not sure about the Purple Squirrel listing. It has an $18,000 spread in salary listed, and included things I would consider not only tech writing, editing, social media, speech writing, and coordination of other writer's work, but also web design and maintenance, running a multi-line switchboard, SQL and other database work, and accounting packages. If it was a place to just send a letter and resume, I could see applying and listing what you have, since these people are clearly fishing. But it's a state job, so I wonder if the person assigned to write the piece knew what the department really wanted, versus what they'd want to have in an ideal world.

I can tell you that those focus jobs are $#%%ed hard to do running a switchboard.

I don't see a way through the keyword gauntlet, so don't think I will apply for the purple squirrel job. Which has writing skills desired up to level V, plus the accounting stuff...and is listed as a level One job.

Did the nonprofit meeting this am, and my brain is finally shutting down. I have four solid days of places I need to be, and none of that is going to advance the entry of resume material into that #$%# HHS site. Or apps anywhere else.

I will have to miss dance, walking tomorrow night, and Launch Pad to get anything done, and I was really looking forward to dance starting up again. And Launch Pad looked interesting/useful.

I think all my reading time just went south, and I can forget any writing for a while.

I'm very tired.

And I quote:

The State of Texas HHSC Hiring Center requires your internet browser to be MS IE version 6.x or greater. Please update your browser and visit us again.

This does not come up until you've spent an hour entering your resume and data, and SAVE IT.

Fairly certain it's been launched into the ether.

STABBITY * STABBITY * STABBITY

Please forgive any typos.

I wish I had wine on the premises.

EDIT: Good news -- apparently the filing my resume on-line worked. Bad news -- the application has flown into the ether. After I get back from an appointment today, I will try again!

I have seen LinkedIn Endorsements popping up. I'm guessing this is a short version of writing people recs? As I will be looking for work next month, I appreciate everyone who has proactively gone after this!

Lots of people stopping by at Backlist eBooks to check out the great .99 Sale on quality eBooks! You'll also find some FREE gems tucked away in there (Check out Vonda McIntyre's author page, for starters.) Spread the word! This is a great time to try books in all genres!

In other news, I am struggling with resume writing (I hate resume writing) and discovered that the Endangered Species Dark Chocolate bar with blueberries is so rich, I can only eat two little squares at a time. (The extra half is kicking my system all the way down....)

The mouth is very happy, tho!

I clearly need a chocolate icon.

Anyone else keep getting job postings from Monster years after you stopped updating your resume? They kept warning me they'd delete it, after XX months of no activity. But maybe a year or so ago, either people started posting for things in my former area, or Monster decided to resurrect the fossils on their site.

Boobs.
